How apt that the 2020 Giro d’Italia starts in the splendid, magnificent and historical capital of Hungary – Budapest. It was the Romans who transformed a Celtic village into Aquincum, initially a military base but gradually transformed into a city with famous baths and amphitheatres. And from 6-11 May 2020, Budapest will be host to the descendants of the Romans for the start of the Giro d’Italia 2020.

Budapest was named European Best Destination in 2019 because ‘Budapest offers the elegance of Paris, the architectural heritage of Vienna, the charm of Porto, Stockholm’s gentle way of life’. Budapest, will also host the Giro's Grande Partenza in 2020. It begins with an individual time trial in Budapest, followed by two long stages (190km+) through the heart of Hungary. This will be a truly epic and unforgettable experience for those who join us.

As an "Official Tour Operator" of the Giro d'Italia, Grand Tours Project is in a special position to deliver the ultimate experience for passionate cyclists. We have designed an ‘Experience’ tour that introduces you to the magic of both Budapest, Hungary and the Giro d’Italia 2020.

And this Tour is without a doubt one of the most unique we have ever designed. Our "Official Tour Operator" status ensures we will have our support vehicles on the course with our cyclists at all times, and we'll gain access to the VIP Giro Club in Budapest to watch the ITT race at the finish line. Our tour is designed for avid cyclists who wish to ride as much as possible on all these 3 stages, for those who wish to have a more relaxed ride of 60-100km per day, and for non-riding partners.

    ARRIVAL - Üdvözöljük to Budapest!

We will meet you at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, and transport you to our lovely hotel in the centre of Budapest, where we will stay for 3 nights - right in the heart of the 103rd edition of the Giro d’Italia. Our team will help you unpack and build your bike, we'll hand out the team kit, and after lunch enjoy a warm up ride around the centre of the Budapest. The ride will include a short climb to the Citadella on Gellért-hegy where we can see the Szabadság-szobor, a freedom statue in remembrance of ‘those who sacrificed their lives for the independence, freedom and prosperity of Hungary’. It is a prominent city landmark and from there we can look down to the magnificent Danube that divides the city into Buda and Pest, and look across to Pest. Coffee time and then back to the hotel for our welcome meeting and first dinner in Budapest.

  • DAY 2 - FRIDAY, 8 MAY

    86km / 890m

After breakfast we will ride from the hotel to Budai Tájvédelmi körzet (The Budai Landscape Protection Area), a famous forested, caves systems and farmland area and home to various endemic animals and plants. It is also where we find the Buda Hills, of which the tallest hill is Nagy-Kopasz (the Great Bald) at 559 m. We will have a delicious picnic lunch in this beautiful forest before riding back to our hotel.

Don’t relax yet – a local guide will take us to explore Budapest before we head to the Team Presentation ceremony inside the VIP zone and where the atmosphere will be energising, inspiring and celebratory.

Dinner will be in the city centre and then back to the hotel for a good nights sleep ahead of Stage 1!

Let the race commence! Get your first taste of the excitement of the Individual Time Trial. The route starts from Heroes’ Square (Hősök tere) and continues along the Danube and the Parliament. After leaving the Danube the route enters in the old city to finish in Trinity Square, after about 1.5km at 4%. We'll enjoy a relaxed ride around town, and then the 9.5 km ITT route in the morning with the crowds cheering us on.

Watching the full race from the luxury of the VIP Giro Club is the best viewing location, so we'll all be there to cheer on the pros.

  • DAY 4 - SUNDAY, 10 MAY

60 km or 107 km (Flat / Semi Flat)

Starting the day in Tarján at 188m, we will ride up Gorba-tető Hill 391m – the second hill the pros will ride in this stage. After a descent, our ride undulates across the Magyar plain to the finish in Gyor. Upon our arrival into Gyor, we will immediately be immersed in the excited atmosphere of crowded streets, to watch the fast and furious sprint to the finish with other cheering spectators. After the presentation we will find our way to the van/s and transfer to our hotel in the beautiful resort of Balatonfüred / Tihany. Tihany, according to the Hungarians, was created by God when he was happy! It has also been voted one of the most beautiful villages in the world! We highly recommend you explore this stunning place and stroll along Lake Balaton just before sunset or visit Echo Hill and shout towards the 9th century Abbey to hear your voice echoing several times.

  • DAY 5 - MONDAY, 11 MAY

    60km or 128km (Flat)

We’ll start riding from the beautiful town of Tihany, following the flat course to Nagykanizsa. This will be our longest ride of our Experience Tour but given the flat terrain and previous days, this should not be a problem for you! And at the finish, we will have exclusive access to cross the line as a group and stand on the podium like pros. Photos of this stage finish will of course be mandatory! After the Grand Tours Project team have finished pretending to be the paparazzi, we will head to our nearby hotel, check in, change and head back to the finish to experience the emotion and excitement of watching the pros fight for the pink! The day will end with a tour around ancient Nagykanizsa, formerly a Roman settlement and later, an important stronghold that helped protect western Europe from Ottoman Empire attacks. We’ll have our last dinner in the centre before heading back to the hotel to pack for departure the next day.

  • DAY 6 - TUESDAY 12 MAY

After last night's celebratory dinner, this morning's sleep-in, a hearty Hungarian breakfast, and coffee, we'll help finish packing your bike and transport you to Budapest airport for your trip home. Or can we tempt you to stay longer for the second week? Or maybe return for the 3rd and final week of Giro d’Italia?

In any event, you'll be taking home memories and buckets of photos, achievements and new friendships that will last forever.
