    Southern Italy

  • Duration

    8 days | 7 nights

  • Length

    1,064km

  • Climb

    17,290m

9 May 2022 - 16 May 2022

The Ride Every Kilometre tour this week is a real challenge! Unlike the professionals you do not have a peloton or team members helping to pull you along. And the designers of the 2022 Giro d’Italia have created an epic!

Back in one of our favourite destinations, Sicily, and first day, we are racing to finish on the active volcano Etna. But not resting in Sicily for long, as we head up over to Sicily’s north coast, cross over to Italy’s toe and head north - flat coastal stretches, a detour into Napoli and then big days of climbing and descending in southern Italy’s wild national parks.

This REK is a real challenge - the race is on to get to the finish lines before the professionals, so early starts and early nights! Grand Tours Project is an Official Giro d’Italia Operator you have access to the closed routes, arrivals, finishes and the podiums.

    Benvenuti in Sicilia!

    30km | 260m

One of our favourite Italian destinations. We'll collect you from Catania Airport and whisk you to our lovely modern hotel in the Sicilian Baroque town of Noto. We'll help get the bikes assembled and fitted and then ride through and around this UNESCO area to Vendicari Natural Reserve and return.

Take the opportunity to wander through Noto before we regroup to discuss the plan for the next couple of days on Sicily.

    Dinner will be nearby.

  • Day 2 - Tuesday 10 May

    Avola - Etna (Rif. Sapienza)

    166km | 3,580m

After an early breakfast we’ll transfer you to Avola. A very quick photo opp at the start and we are riding inland to Noto, then climbing over to Vizzini and through the agricultural fields to Paterno. The ascent to the Etna finish is dominated by dark lava fields and islands of greenery.

No relaxing as we’ll need to cross the finish line and stand on the winners’ podium before the pros arrive!.

We will have warm clothes for you and you can watch the riders arrive at the finish.

We will transfer you to your hotel in Catania.

  • Day 3 - Wednesday 11 May

    Catania - Messina

    172km | 1,200m

After yesterday's climbing baptism, today is a relative stroll in the park. Having said that, we still need an early start to stay ahead of the road closures and the race.

The route will take us along the coast towards Toarmina and then up to Portella Mandrazzi at 1,125m and a lovely descent to the Sicilian north coast. Flat fast riding all the way along the coast to Messina.

Once we have regrouped we’ll take a ferry to the Italian toe and transfer to our hotel.

  • Day 4 - Thursday 12 May

Palmi - Scalea (Riviera dei Cedri)

    192km | 900m

Make the most of today, it's ‘easy’.

After breakfast we’ll transfer you to the start at Palmi. From here it is a nice climb to the military airport town of Aeroporto L. Razza before descending to the 135 odd kilometres along the flat Calabrian coast route to Scalea. Time to relax, change and secure a prime position to watch the tight and fast peloton sprint into the finish.

    Transfer to our next hotel.

  • Day 5 - Friday 13 May

    Diamante - Potenza

    198km | 4,490m

We hope that you slept well last night because today is,

to be polite, epic! Stage 7 is almost 200km and nearly 4,450m elevation - the Giro creators have stated it ‘is worthy of a stage through the Dolomites’.

So today we start very early and at Viggiano after about 2,500m and 105km we can reassess. Depending upon time constraints, we may need to stop to let the race pass us and then continue the route. And if the day is too arduous, the GTP van is available to collect you and take you closer to the finish at Potenza.

Transfer to our spectacular Naples hotel… and a well deserved rest.

    Hotel Naples
  • Day 6 - Saturday 14 May

Napoli - Napoli (Procida Capitale Italiana della Cultura)

    149km | 2,130m

To ensure we ride the full route before it is closed and enjoy the VIP access passes at the finish, we will start riding early.

Stage 8 travels through Napoli to the Bacoli - Monte di Procida peninsula. Add in 5 loops of the peninsula and we’ll return along the race route back to Napoli and the finish....before the race starts!

After changing at our hotel, we’ll return to the Giro Arrivo VIP Zone to mingle and enjoy the intense atmosphere as the pros sprint in.

Once the pros have arrived, we’ll transfer to our hotel closer to Isernia.

    Hotel Isernia
  • Day 7 - Sunday 15 May

    Isernia - Blockhaus

    187km | 4,990m

Much like Stage 7, Stage 9 will be another real challenge for you. This route crosses the wild Apennines - beautiful landscapes and ancient villages should take your mind off the climbs, and enjoy the descents. There is a double climb on the Blockhaus and according to the Giro technical description, ‘a series of hairpins with double‑digit gradients’ ...and we love hairpins!

Again, no stress if we need to stop to let the race pass, we will continue until the end or you can opt for the comfort of the GTP support van.

We then transfer to our hotel in Rome.

Congratulations you have completed or done your best to meet the Ride Every Kilometre Challenge.
