Basque Country ... experience the best of "Green Spain", riding from the Basque Country overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and along the northern coast of Spain beside the amazing Picos Europa. Discover some of the epic passes of northern Spain, the lakes of Covadonga and Alto de L'Angliru, featured on the Grand Tour of Spain. Fall in love with some medieval villages, charming people and traditions, and visit the amazing cities like Bilbao, Santander, and Oviedo along the way.

This tour is designed to enjoy incredible rides between 70 -110 km, making sure we always have the best views and safe roads. We’ll ride at our own pace along peaceful verdant hilly roads. As well as visiting medieval villages, fishing ports and savouring the lush green landscape with views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Once in the mountains, we will conquer the most impressive mountain climbs the region has to offer, including the iconic Alto de L’Angliru (1,600m) and the glorious Lagos de Covadonga (1,135m).

During this tour, we’ll stay in Bilbao, Santander, Llanes and Oviedo. Each evening, we’ll enjoy local cuisine and stay in a lovely hotel – for this tour, the quality of hotels, food and wine are as important as cycling.

DAY 1 - TUESDAY

BIENVENIDO A BILBAO

Today we arrive in Bilbao, the capital of Basque country and home to the world famous Guggenheim museum. After meeting you at the airport we’ll have a short 15 minute transfer to your hotel in heart of the city. Once you’ve settled in and we’ve helped set up your bikes there’s a chance for an easy ride to warm up your legs. We’ll take a short tour through the iconic city, surrounded by green mountains that overlook the Atlantic ocean. In the evening you are free to explore the city and get some rest for the exciting days ahead.

DAY 2 - WEDNESDAY

BILBAO TO SANTANDER - 118km / 1170 m

Today we will enjoy a rolling warm-up to Castro Urdiales, where we will stop to take some quick classic photos in the port, before continuing our beautiful ride along the northern coast of Spain. Once in Laredo, we will have a very fresh Gazpacho and prepare for a great picnic with views of the cliffs and sea. The last 15 km before reaching Santander are relatively flat and we will be able to ride at a fast pace emulating the spint of a race. Once in the city of Santander, we will transfer by taxi to our hotel, where we will enjoy the rest of the afternoon in the heart of this beautiful coastal city.

SAFETY & HYGIENE MEASURES

With international travel regulations causing continued uncertainty, we have made it our priority to implement COVID-19 hygiene procedures to ensure you a safe and worry-free holiday. Here's what you can expect when you choose to travel with Grand Tours Project.

Hygiene Consideration on your trip:

  • Hand sanitizer will be available at all times and located in convenient areas to ensure the possibility of regular disinfecting and washing of hands.
  • All guests and staff will be provided with face masks that must be worn where necessary. (for example in vehicles, where a distance of 1.5m can not be obtained between guests etc.)
  • The anti-bacterial spray will also be readily available to be used to sanitise physical equipment such as surfaces, boxes, bottles etc.
  • Staff will disinfect all vehicles daily on tour and bikes will continue to be cleaned daily.
  • Staff will prepare and serve any food with gloves and face masks.

Pre, during and post-trip measures:

  • All staff will be tested 24 hours before each tour departure.
  • Guests must oblige with government rules set by the host country (This may include quarantine upon arrival).
  • Regular temperature checks will be taken by staff and guests throughout the trip.
  • If a guest or member of staff displays symptoms of COVID-19 they will immediately be put into an isolation point and a medical test will be organised at the earliest convenience.
  • A track and trace system will be in place to ensure that if any guests display symptoms up to 14 days after the trip, all guests and staff on the trip will be notified.
