If you were Dutch, Slovenian or a cycling aficionado, Primož Roglič of Team Jumbo-Visma was always on the world cycle racing radar.
If you were like me and were swept up in the excitement of racing only during the 3 Grand Tours – Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España – then Team Jumbo-Visma and Roglič over the last 2 seasons seemed be challenging the status quo.
In 2018, Roglič nearly created an upset in the Tour de France. In 2019 he was on the podium of the Giro d’Italia and the came first in Vuelta a Espana!

Roglič an all-rounder rider, born in Slovenia in October 1989, and already a world champion before he took up cycling. In 2007, he was Junior World Ski Jumping Champion. In 2012 he quit ski jumping and switched to cycling. By 2013 he was a member of a professional team and in 2015 had won the Tour of Slovenia.
2016 he was on the world cycle tour circuit and part of Team LottoNL-Jumbo and proving his potential and then surprising everyone by winning the Stage 9 individual time trial in Chianti of the Giro on a spare bike without a cycle computer. Legendary!
2017 he was winning stages and several races in preparation for the Tour de France. He became the first Slovenian to win a Tour de France stage and came 2 nd overall in the Mountains classification. In Bergen, at the World Championships he came 2nd behind Tom Dumoulin in the time trail.
2018 was the year he nearly pulled off a podium finish the Tour de France, only to be pushed into a very respectable 4th place by Chris Froome. He also won The Basque Country, Romandie and Slovenia tours.
By 2019 Roglič was a race favourite. He won the Tirreno-Adriatico and Romandie tours and although he wore the Maglia Rosa for 6 stages, he was eventually on the podium in 3 rd. Utterly exhausted after completing the Giro d’Italia he withdrew from the Tour de France and instead competed in the Vuelta a Espana… and the rest is history. He won. The first Slovenian to win a Grand Tour.
Quiet, shy, charming and determined, he seems uncomfortable to find himself in a position where the media want his opinion and sound grabs. Be assured that he is a quiet achiever and we will be seeing and hearing more of him, Team Jumbo-Visma and Bianchi!
